For Contributors - Assessment Criteria
The criteria used to rate the manuscript
- To what extent has the research problem been clearly
formulated?
- To what extent have important concepts been clearly
formulated?
- To what extent is the theoretical or conceptual framework
appropriate?
- To what extent has/have (the) data collection method(s)
been described clearly?
- To what extent is the argumentation in the article
clear, cohesive and logical?
- To what extent could the article render a contribution
to the promotion and development of knowledge in the
field?
A brief narrative report on the article, providing a general
or overall assessment of the manuscript and its suitability
for publication in an accredited journal.
- Comments on the strong aspects of the research reported
in the article
- Comments on the weak aspects of the research reported
in the article
- The PIE journal is committed to the development of
new authors in the educational research community in
Southern Africa and beyond. In order to assist such
writers, specific recommendations are made by the reviewer(s)
on how the article could be improved, if at all.
- Check that the author(s) honour(ed) the guidelines
in respect of the following technical aspects:
- References
- Language (in general)
- That the article is written in a non-sexist and
non-racist way
- That all statistical calculations are accompanied
by a declaration from an institution (e.g. a University
Department which renders a statistical service)
that the calculations and interpretation of the
statistics are correct.
The referee makes a general recommendation
- Accept without the need for any further revisions
- Accept with minor revisions as indicated
- Accept but not before major revisions as outlined
in the report
- Reject outright
Manuscripts are rejected for one or more of the following
reasons
- could not be accommodated within the specific thematic
focus of volume numbered

- did not conform to the editorial policy as stated in the
journal
- did not clearly state the problem / research questions
- did not show innovation in theory or methodology
- requires a more substantive and rigorous theoretical orientation
- does not provide new insights into an educational problem
- employed inadequate data
- does not sustain a logical and coherent argument
- is insufficiently relevant to the readership of the journal
- is more suitable to other forms of publication (newspapers,
- magazines and teacher practice journals)
